Will you join me in the fight for equality?
My first vlog in a long time! Yay! Really hoping to do more of these! The video is in ASL (although not signed perfectly; forgive me! I'm working really hard on my fluency right now!) and captioned in English so everyone can enjoy!
In this post, you’ll find 8 specific goals I’ve set for myself in 2017. I’m a firm believer in setting challenging, but realistic goals. Some of these I will probably exceed, while others will be more challenging to meet. Also, I believe that goals need to be specific. You’ll notice, for each goal, I make the actions very specific. I believe if goals are too vague, you are setting yourself up for failure. Either you find yourself justifying why you met them
even though you don’t really feel as if you did, or you find yourself feeling defeated because you’re not sure what practical steps you need to take to actually accomplish your goal. So, with my best foot forward, these are some of the goals I’ve set for myself in 2017:
1. Read through the Bible
I am doing a read through the Bible in a year plan through the YouVersion Bible app on my phone (I have an android, but I believe this app is available on both IOS and Android). I really like it so far. The typical day consists of about 6 chapters, some from the Old Testament, a Psalm or a Proverb, and some from the New testament. I personally prefer to read through different books of the Bible at the same time as opposed to a cover to cover approach. The YouVersion app also provides a devotional each day that digs deeper into each Bible chapter for that day, which I love!
2. Get number of Bible verses memorized up to 100
I absolutely love memorizing Bible verses! Committing verses to memory has enhanced my relationship with God immensely. Specifically, I notice that it improves my prayer life. When I am praying over specific people or situations, God gives me verses that I have memorized that are relevant to that prayer. It enables me to pray in a more powerful way and to hear God speak to me more. I use www.scripturetyper.com to help me memorize verses. It allows you to add any verses that you choose and/or to choose from a database of verses in their system. It starts off having you review a new verse daily, and then each time you get it at least 90% right on the first try, it advances your review frequency. I have 70 verses memorized so far and I love this system!
3. Learn at least 30 new signs a month
It’s no secret that I love ASL. But, I feel like I haven’t been committing enough time to expanding my vocabulary. I’ve been signing for about 6 years, but I feel like I stayed pretty stagnant the last couple years or so. I’ve still used ASL and kept up with the culture, but I haven’t been growing in my knowledge of the language. So, I’m committing to expanding my vocabulary this year. Expanding my vocabulary means that both my expressive and receptive skills will improve; I will be able to express myself better and fingerspelling less. And, I’m more likely to understand what someone else is saying.
4.Watch something in ASL at least three times a week
This goes along with my previous goal; expanding my knowledge of ASL. My receptive skills have always been weaker than my expressive skills, especially if the other person is signing very fast. The more frequently I watch videos in ASL or sign with other people, the more this improves. If I slack off in this department, I find it takes me a little while to get my receptive skills back to where they were. Ideally, I’d like to watch something every day, but it doesn’t always happen and, although I want my goals to be challenging, I also want them to be realistic. Of course, having conversations is the best way to learn and improve, but since I don’t know very many people who sign, sometimes videos are my only option to improve my receptive skills. I’m very thankful for YouTube!
5. Read at least 26 books
I love reading, but I have to be intentional about making sure reading doesn’t take a back seat to other things. 26 books for the year is one book every two weeks. I know some books might take me slightly longer at times, but others will take less time. So, I believe this is a realistic goal for me. I like to make sure I get a variety of genres in, too. My favorites are Christian non-fiction, especially by Christian women authors, Women’s fiction, Biographies, and some Young Adult stuff.
6. Reevaluate possessions regularly and maintain a minimalist lifestyle
Being a minimalist is another thing that requires being intentional. Each time I go to buy something I ask myself if it will add value to my life, if I will realistically use it, if I have room for it, if I have the money for it, etc. Also, I need to scan my apartment regularly to prevent any clutter from sneaking up on me! I plan to write more posts about why I have decided to be a minimalist and how I do so.
7. Spend time with friends at least one per week
It can be easy to get lost in the business of life and neglect our relationships with our friends and/or our family. Personally, I see my family often, but, if I’m not intentional, I don’t see my friends as often as I’d like. When we don’t spend time with people, our relationships suffer. Technology is great, but nothing beats spending time with people in person. Humans are designed to be in relationship with each other. We need to be in the physical presence of other people to thrive in all areas of our lives.
8. Post Blog/Vlog content at least once per week
This is something I was doing well with for a little while, and then I kind of fell off the wagon. My goal is to post new content, either in blog or vlog format, at least once a week. This is a challenging goal for me, but it is definitely one I want to work on. Even though I sometimes have difficulty getting motivated to write a blog post or film a vlog, I really enjoy it once I get started and especially when I get to share it with readers! So, I am going to do my very best to bring you some great new content in 2017!
What are you goals for this year? How are you making out so far?
